Before buying a dog from a breeder, it is important to know how to pick a reputable breeder.  To ensure this, make sure the breeder is interested in selling healthy, well-socialized animals with good temperaments.

Reputable breeders will also stand by the quality of their puppies by offering health guarantees, such as the dog is worm-free, and will often have begun house-breaking efforts and provided vaccines appropriate to the age of the dog.

If you are buying from an out-of-state breeder, make sure that the breeder thoroughly explains how they plan to humanely send you your new dog.  Often they will provide a phone number to answer any questions.

Online recommendations are often a good source of information about the breeder.  Before choosing one to buy from, perform a Google search.  See what other reviewers are saying, but be wary if there is only one or two old reviews.
